Aerfort Dhún na nGall commenced operation in 1986 and was developed, with the assistance of the Exchequer, Udaras na Gaeltachta, The Department of Public Enterprise, Private Investors, Donegal Co. Council, the International Fund for Ireland and the European Regional Development Fund.
In the mid 1980's the runway was a mere grass strip, which was then replaced by a hard surface runway with temporary buildings and in the 1990's the runway was extended to 1,500 meters and a bright attractive terminal building with modern navigational aids and equipment were added.
